Pierre Gilieth kills a man after a violent argument and must flee Paris. He finds sanctuary in Barcelona, Spain but while there, his wallet is stolen. Destitute and to the point of no recourse, Pierre decides to join the Spanish Foreign Legion.
This film is not currently playing on MUBI but 30 other great films are. See what's now showing
Jean Gabin made, I believe, six films with Julien Duvivier. So far I have seen four and they are all great. Here he joins the Foreign Legion and marries a beautiful Bedouin. There's transfolk in this picture, too.
Paris, Barcelona, the African desert. Suzy Prim, Viviane Romance and Annabella, three women that will light up Pierre Gilieth's path to his ineluctable sacrifice. Jean Gabin, Robert le Vigan and Pierre Renoir, three performances that will stay in the annals of the French cinema of the 30's. Masterpiece.
30's French films have a rawness that American films lost after the code took over. "La Bandera" is a beauty with tender performances from Gabin and Annabella. The photography is amazing. Some of it looks documentary. Duvivier was a master craftsman.
