Just watched at Tokyo FILMeX after King HU's 191 minute LEGEND OF THE MOUNTAIN. Amazing to see how 191 min. LOTM flows so well and 79 minute THE NIGHT I SWAM drags on and on. Full of looong shots with no action in them, just the camera hanging still. Felt like it was trying to get to the 80 min mark. The little boy Takara felt over-directed. Pushed too hard to include 0 dialogue.
Viennale, DCP _ Beautiful collaboration between two young filmmakers. Shot in snowy nord Japan, there is an obvious touch of documentary in this. The kid is hardly playing (he is 6) and the family in the film is really his family. With Manivel, less is more. But it is not just advancing by substracting, there are some nice subtle ideas, a way of composing a story almost by whispering. Genuinely simple and touching.
