To give this movie some credit: these days conspiracies are everywhere, but it was a bold move to make the Illuminati the central villain way back in 2001. "Tomb Raider" is infused by that pre-9/11 sense of naiveté, but Angelina Jolie is credible in the role of Lara Craft, and there are entire sequences of this that feel like gameplay footage come to life. In fact, the movie works better as a cutscene than a film.
With Angelina Jolie perfectly cast as Lara Croft this should have been a pretty good action movie as she is a hot gun-shooting archaeologist, but it is all ruined by a script that pisses me off. It is mechanically written, worse than anything written for the computer games it was based on, has pathetic humor and the annoying reset button ending that I hate. The action is also uninspiring.
One of the better video games adaptations out there. On the other hand, it's a 'park your brain on the entrance' kind of movie, as all the bits of the story that could make this movie not a total plot hole were cut out in the final script. Entertainment purposes only, use at your own risk if looking for well thought story. But, Jolie does look great here, though I don't approve her bra being stuffed to fit the role.
