It's a very light film. I don't want to be too harsh, because I'm fond of Tom Hanks and Nia Vardalos, but it lacks thematic and structural cohesion. The premise is interesting and it would be fun to see some comedic struggle and growth. The stakes should feel higher. Also, the dialogue and relationships are too easy and, as a result, are clunky and weightless. Mildly entertaining.
Completely out of touch script by Hanks and Nia Vardolas that is supposed to have us rooting for Hanks and Roberts to get together instead resulting in us the audience thinking "who cares". Really quite awful with Hanks offering the type of performance we've seen before and Julia Roberts really coming off here as unlikable and as bored to be in this movie as we are watching it.
Not a great movie but a pretty likable one. You'll probably go into a diabetic coma from how... sweet and pleasant this movie is. You see the ending coming from a year away but in spite of this and the overtly-engaging (and sometimes forced) supporting cast Larry Crowne is a pleasant watch. Oh, and George Takei was hysterical.
