Despite the manipulative contrivance of that ending -- an unnecessary, predictable twist found too often in today's cinescape -- the sincerity of Guinness' performance makes this much more heartfelt than a straightforward comedy of manners. "Comedy, we may say, is society protecting itself - with a smile." - J.B. Priestley
LAST HOLIDAY finds his place between the philosophical tale and the social satire. Alec Guinness, at times pitiful, at times humourous, is always brilliant as George Bird, a common man associating with the British upper class. The film is not a masterpiece but has smart dialogues and a few interesting scenes. Highly recommended.
