***1/2. Even if Robert Sigl directed quite a lot of TV movies and TV series épisodes, 'Laurin' is his first and only real movie to date. And the film is a very good surprise. Set in 1901 in a small village near a river, 'Laurin' plunges us into the landscapes of German Romanticism. If you like dark forests, gloomy castles and howling wind, it's a film for you. Recommended.
The typical 70s/ 80s Eastern European cinema sinister fairy tale weirdness done very well. Throw in some subtle and puzzling suggestions of pedophilia, incest, and the supernatural every once in a while, and you have yourself a vague and eerie European gothic horror classic.
