Much like its lead character, the movie is simple-minded, unsophisticated and lacking in depth and sharp wit - in short, an average chick flick. However, it makes up for that in charm. I was surprisingly invested in the protagonist who turned out not to be as annoying as I thought she'd be. Sure, she's a bit of a dolt, but she's captivating. While nothing to write home about, it's a funny and even heartwarming film.
Legally Blonde is a movie about how American culture systematically marginalizes feminine women, dismissing their interests, their intelligence, and their agency. This leads to generally misogynist comments and behaviors, unfair hiring and application practices, not to mention outright sexual harassment and assault. Legally Blonde is also really fucking funny and Reese Witherspoon is a goddamn national treasure.
