Sophia Loren's pickpocket prostitute, John Wayne's jaded adventurer, and Rossano Brazzi's possibly lunatic wannabe saint cross the Sahara in search of some mythical treasure-filled lost city in the desert. It sounds more fun than it is. It fails badly both as desert adventure film and as romance, yet there's something about its downbeat starkness that isn't unappealing, its Libyan desert used to striking effect.
Slight but atmospheric adventure story, with beautiful cinematography and an effective, wind-laden soundtrack. Plus, Sophia Loren is one of the few people to lay John Wayne out in a brawl (even if she had to cheat and use a frying pan to the head)
