Legends of the Fall is a weird and uncertain attempt at a decades-spanning epic; it wants to be a David Lean film but its story feels watered-down. The actors try real hard but the performances are absurd and incoherent in the face of so many year-spanning transitions and ludicrous life changing events, most especially Anthony Hopkins stroke afflicted dad or Brad Pitt's emo white savior/honorary native american.
This film is a sprawling, melodramatic mess - and it works. The performances are intense, but perfectly in context. The cinematography and the sheer size of the production is impressive - the design was also quite beautiful. The WWI scenes in particular were gigantic and complex. Overall, this romantic epic that sweeps across several decades is one effective tale.
