Andrey Zvyagintsev Russia, 2014

ihor's rating of the film Leviathan

A fine allegory of contemporary Russia exposing the sin laden within every depth of Russia's institutions from the government on down to the individual. Attempts at reform, justice or meaning only end up failing as forces seemingly beyond control, be they fate or the nature of Russian character, impede. At times Zvyagintsev falls into vodka soaked Russian cliches, but the clever, if linear, narrative is effective.
