Our take

Working with key collaborators Alison Steadman (Abigail’s Party), Jim Broadbent (Another Year) and Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner), Britain’s Mike Leigh kicked off the 1990s with this endearingly oddball, tragicomic family drama: a depiction London’s working class both upbeat and ultimately optimistic.
