Grand Prize of the Jury in Cannes. After Messidor (1979), Tanner decided to leave Switzerland and make movies outside his homeland's borders. He chose the western part of Ireland to shoot Light Years Away. It clearly wasn't the Icarus myth that interested him here but rather the complex Father/Son and Teacher/Student relation between Trevord Howard and Mick Ford. Not indispensable but still recommended.
I think Tanner pulls off something that would just be ridicuously pretentious and/or very odd if it was done by someone else. I love the mood in his films, that's the most important thing for me, more important than theme and story (that might be my shortcoming).
L'édifiante histoire d'un vieil original, habitant un garage désaffecté, qui rêve de voler et d'un sympathique jeune Irlandais avec lequel il se liera d'amitié. On s'attendait à mieux !
