Cute kids, but this is maudlin as hell. The director is so obvious with his aesthetic choices that this overlong movie feels particularly slow. "Get on with it, already," was the refrain in my living room as we trudged through two hours of sugar-sweet Prince and the Pauper style fantasy.
Ryota: “In our family, the idea is that one must be independent” Yudai: “In these 6 months, I’ve spent more time with him than you. For kids, giving then time is everything.” Ryota: “There are things at work that only I can do.” Yudai: “But no one can play the role of the father other than you.”
Good original script by director Kore-eda. Good performances by all actors. Above average cinematography. A lovely subject of parents and their relationships with kids, typical in Asia, possibly atypical in the West. It is a film that most audiences would love. The lead actress Machiko Ono was the lead in Naomi Kawase's "The Mourning Forest" and "Suzaku" as well.
