Charming film taylored for Leslie Caron after her success in 'An American in Paris'. Once again playing a young and naive ingenue, she is an orphaned young girl who gets adopted by members of a circus troup and becomes part of a puppet show. The scenes with the puppets are really engaging and Caron's innocence is totally fresh and believable. Ferrer, Aumont and Gabor are excellent.
"...a song of love is a sad song". Candy coloured yet downbeat melodrama that happens to include two beautifully realised dream ballets (especially the sad and slightly troubling final one). This film also features one of the strangest central romances I've ever come across. Highly recommended!
