A prohibition-set gangster thriller penned by Lehane with Affleck in the director's chair sounds unassailable on paper -- but Ben works best with focused thrillers set in gritty contemporary environments, and "Live by Night" sprawls and wanders without the engaging characters, humble insights or subtlety to sustain itself. You'd be pressed to find a more ravishing film, but the gorgeous pastels are ultimately hollow.
Pentiti
This plays like a prohibition, Boson Mob flick...just not a great one. Oh wait. I just couldn't get involved. Loved the female characters none of which play into sterotypes And the movie looked fantastic Affleck has so much potential. Looking forward to seeing more from him.
I don't know if Ben Affleck has made a truly great film, but he's made a few that are at least damn close - and this may be my favorite of his work. He is an outstanding director who consistently works with top-flight cinematographers to create gorgeously-shot films. Who would have thought that he would become one of the most consistent of mainstream directors?
Unfortunately, Ben Affleck has a Ben Affleck problem. Wrong cast for this. You don't buy it: he is stiff; stoic; unfunny; looking uncomfortable, distracted, unhappy; he simply lacks the 'mobster-charisma'. That's the basic problem throughout the movie. Just imagine: same age group Tom Hardy or Leonardo DiCaprio would have made the difference. The shootout in the Tampa hotel is great, but can't save it: 2,5 stars.
Affleck has received a lesson in hubris with his latest after the very over-rated 'Argo'. This isthe filmic equivalent of the star athlete who doesn't train for his next event thinking the same magic will strike again. It does not. A misfire of the first order from scripting and casting/performance all the way down the line. When even the camerawork of Robert Richardson doesn't impress you've got serious issues.
Wasn't that bad at all. Solid. The gangster genre has been pretty much done with for last 20 or so years. This gangster movie has its own take. Very well directed by affleck packing a wallop of homages to the classic warners gangster flix, which I have a special affinity for. Very much more action oriented than most gangster movies but the action is well directed. Not a bad gangster movie with very Few weak spots.
