An extraordinary blending of cinematic elements & genre conventions in service of an astounding directorial vision. A frank, gentle testimony of the repression, subjugation & pathologizing of women's power, and of the gradients & subtleties of freedom, made with rich, deep, empathetic perceptiveness and a documentarian's sense of the complex relations between individuals & their socio-economic contexts.
An ambitious narrative debut from Yang Lina after a career in documentary filmmaking. The story is a strange mix of the sensual and the sensory telling a tale of a privileged housewife whose life is thrown out of balance when she starts having a possible supernatural encounter with an amorous ghost. But this does not give into genre conventions but stages a reflective take on marriage, motherhood and spirituality.
The absurdity (of the horseman fantasies but even more of her best friend's behaviour) *can* feel a little over the top and cheesy but ultimately this is a powerful film about female desire. The ending is fucking perfect, suspending the bottom line to the very end // sorry to hear it seems to be going over people's heads.
