Philip, an English, lonely, and middle-aged widower living in Denmark, is hosting his son’s wedding at his villa in Sorrento. Ida, the bride’s mother, is a Danish hairdresser recuperating from cancer, and has just been left by her husband for a younger woman. So she, like Philip, is without a date.
