Films like this signaled the end of the Hays Code and Mid-century Hollywood limitations. 5 years earlier, we wouldn't have seen a back-alley abortion this close up. By the end of the decade, the Hays Code would be history, along with it's control over movie scripts, and the New Hollywood would be what America was watching (when they weren't watching television).
Cinematography by Milton Krasner. "Desire" list. Again, in a film with Natalie Wood i choose her partner, the inextricable Steve McQueen, a solid figure of Hollywood masculinity, which owes so much to Mitchum's hieratic somnambulism as to the new version of the straight man that emerged in the '60s, of which Newman was the exponent. A great forgotten filmmaker, a beautiful film, two gorgeous fragile animals.
