    Gruesome but true: nearly ten years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki there were more Japanese victims of American nukes. A fishing boat has the awful luck of pulling tuna just as the US drops an H-bomb on Bikini. Shindo shows compassion for the victims without sinking into tear-jerking sentimentality or easy anti-Americanism: the one American speaking part is the perfect cold bureaucrat, which says all that needs said.
