Ratings & Reviews

  1. Eric Rucker's rating of the film Lumière and Company

Great idea, colossally disappointing results. Annoying framing film. Putting sound over the starts and ends of a lot of the short films. Too many male directors of little vision, not enough women. Not enough directors from outside of Europe. Fatuous pseudo-theory questions—"Is film mortal?"—when we could have heard interesting discussion about so many things from the directors. Lovely photographs interspersed.

  2. Andrew Miller's rating of the film Lumière and Company

Not surprising that the quality varies, but the collective weight of their tribute is valuable even now, in the digital future.

  3. Samuel Donath's rating of the film Lumière and Company

    For hardcore film fans only.

  4. magali de lepeleere's rating of the film Lumière and Company

Haneke's and Lynch's ones were the best

  5. AdrianM.'s rating of the film Lumière and Company

I seem to share most people's opinion here that Mr Lynch did the best job.

  6. El Biffo's rating of the film Lumière and Company

Watch the original Lumiere films first. If they intrigue you, then try this homage by 41 prominent, contemporary film makers. It is an academic, but playful, exercise. Being a cinema geek, I enjoyed it.

  7. Michael Convery's rating of the film Lumière and Company

Watching Angelopoulos' segment with Ulysses' Gaze in mind is a beautiful experience. If Ulysses' Gaze is a homeric epic, then this short is a homeric haiku.

  8. CRW's rating of the film Lumière and Company

  11. Samuel Andrade's rating of the film Lumière and Company

My favourite shorts by Zhang Yimou, Michael Haneke, Idrissa Ouedraogo, Claude Lelouch and John Boorman.

  12. Juan Barquin's rating of the film Lumière and Company

Most of these shorts didn't do much for me and I was relatively disappointed because this could have gone much better. As most people seem to agree, David Lynch really did the best job with his short and made the most of it. Claude Lelouch, Andrei Konchalovsky, and Peter Greenaway were the others that really did a great job in my personal opinion.

  13. εξώτερο Διάστημα's rating of the film Lumière and Company

everything that celebrates silent film & the occasional snippets of unpredictable grace one can accidentally bump into daily, deserves some love. it`s a pity many chose to film modern filming equipment, like the ultimate fetish to be revered.they film,ok,but no need pushing this down that slope, les dessous de la profession ain`t that fun after all. i liked Kiarostami & think Lelouch captured the very essence of film.

  14. Narain Jashanmal's rating of the film Lumière and Company

My favorites on here are David Lynch's for the sheer technical bravura, Merchant Ivory's for the simple & subtle statement it makes and the minimalism of Abbas Kiarostami's short which contrasts the dramatic & the quotidien with clever use of sound.

  15. Ardhi Syaifuddin's rating of the film Lumière and Company

Even with a limited time for 52 seconds, Lynch could make something amazing

  16. Marco Adamo Graziosi's rating of the film Lumière and Company

  17. In An Expression Of The Inexpressible's rating of the film Lumière and Company

Two or three great shorts (and some more shitty ones) made with the holy grail of cinema. A breeze of history and a must see for all the movie fans. But it had much more potential and could be really a homage and not just a pile of something.

  18. Phil Worfel's rating of the film Lumière and Company

Interesting curio. Worth seeing especially for history buffs and short film lovers. The obstructions are a delightful task to see these artists play with, with of course hit or miss results.
