Ratings & Reviews

  1. FISCHER's rating of the film Madame Bovary

  2. Illusion Travels By Streetcar's rating of the film Madame Bovary

"Bad and the Beautiful explicity makes of filmmaking an artistic, passionaite, soul-crushing labor." http://illusionpodcast.blogspot.com/2014/09/episode-29-vincente-minnelli-melodramas.html

  3. Scienceofphantoms's rating of the film Madame Bovary

All Hollywood films are about Hollywood or all Hollywood films are about Emma Bovary. Or Judy Garland. "Anachronistic" doesn't begin to describe how precisely Minnelli makes Emma THE figure of 1949 America. Even Van Heflin's Charles has all the barely-resuscitated masculinity of melodrama and film noir - the only glaring weakness, in my book. A masterclass in form, and, I'm surprised to say, one of Minnelli's best.

  4. Warren Spratley's rating of the film Madame Bovary

Minnelli's despairing remake of his earlier THE PIRATE. Robin Wood, you are profoundly right: this is an exquisite film, one of the supreme examples of Hollywood melodrama, and a "neglected and misrecognized" masterpiece.

  5. Stu Witmer's rating of the film Madame Bovary

Hollywood cliche that cynically panders to the very Romantic notions it ostensibly decries. Turgid and mundane in the extreme. A perfect example of everything "Hollywood" that makes my skin crawl.
