So why in the world did Rebecca Miller decide to make a Woody Allen/Noam Baumbach film? Not without its charms but the film seems such a worthless derivative trifle from a director capable of more. Greta Gerwig plays yet another charming but manic character, Hawke another boy-man and Moore adds to her accent pile with an off-kilter turn. As Saturday night date night entertainment it was OK but nothing more.
Given the cast and the recent influx of terrific indie films - especially the ones starring Greta Gerwig - the fact that "Maggie's Plan" is so mediocre is heartbreaking. A tremendous cast finds themselves meandering in what feels like heavily sanitized mumblecore, to the point where conversations feel aggressively perfunctory and quirks have resorted to characters worshiping "ficto-critical anthropology."
