After Bull Durham, my favorite baseball movie. There’s a sort of grittiness that goes well with the no-nonsense quips, even amidst the ridiculsness of certain characters. Ward captures the superstitious nature of the game extremely well, deepening the mystic that runs throughout the movie.
To be honest, what I respect most about this film is not the writing, actors, or particular moments - it's the MLB. It's insane that at one time in the 80s, Major League Baseball lent out the use of their trademark names and teams for an R-rated, foul-mouthed, farfetched and ridiculous account of the major leagues. There is no scrap of realism anywhere here and that's maybe why they did it. Will never happen again.
