It’s the last day in the life of an elderly man, wandering through the streets of a Mexico City that is at once familiar and foreign. The man goes about his daily rituals, exquisitely drawing us into his rhythm. Through his eyes we experience the city in its splendor and its grimness.

Our take

With a patient, 9-minute opening shot Malaventura starts as it means to continue: this slice-of-life, minimalist drama situates its protagonist in their everyday urban environment and asks us not to look away. An excellent debut from Michel Lipkes, an impressively sobering, existential experience.
