Don't feel this quite deserves the opprobrium it's been dealt. It's ambitious and there are good things in the first half. I liked the hues and the non-linear exposition that gave a sense of psychological seriousness. Sadly it comes undone as it descends into a surfeit of CGI and overblown disaster tropes (and crude 911 references). A shame: I still feel there's a good film hiding somewhere in this bloated material.
There isn't much you can do with this character. He is, quite frankly, a force of nature. So if an alien threat decides to invade our planet, what do you really expect? A peaceful fight? That's almost impossible as we can see in the last act of the movie. I liked how they gave him a more human approach even if he has the ability to act like God.
