"Mandingo doesn't have that over-the-top, exhilarating badness that you expect from an exploitation film. It's repellent and engrossing, but also sad and troubling. We...keep waiting for humanity to crawl out from the decay and knowing, from history, that that is just not going to happen. Mandingo is far too grounded to be labeled exploitation - serious, sobering, and surprisingly well made. - Tom Becker, DVD Verdict
An important American film, co-starring Perry King, who also stars in the trash cinema classic "Bad" (1977). Almost certainly an influence on Tarantino's "Django Unchained"! I actually liked this one more. And at the time it was released there were extremely trashy television ads for it, I wish i could see those again but there's a trailer here that will give you a taste: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SF1TmC-k-Gg
Unflinching Southern gothic melodrama, gorgeously filmed with a sweaty, grotesque atmosphere oozing from each frame. Far more than just a "camp classic", this is an anti-Gone with the Wind that isn't afraid to stare the ridiculousness of slavery and racist hysteria straight in the face.
