Ratings & Reviews

  1. Alexander Dunkelberger's rating of the film Manual of Arms

Frampton achieves something aesthetically great here. The experiments pay off and make something interesting, which is the case half of the time so far with my experiences with the artist.

  3. Matthew_Lucas's rating of the film Manual of Arms

Prior to shooting MANUAL OF ARMS with a 16mm Bolex, Hollis Frampton was known primarily as a photographer. This initial foray into the cinematic medium was basically just an extended screen test, featuring lone subjects against a black backdrop as Frampton experimented with camera technique and editing. Aesthetically fascinating, especially as an experimental exercise and a gateway to Frampton's later work.
