Fred lives on his own. His wife is dead, his son has left. He leans on the church, busses, meat-and-two-veg. Then Leo appears. Leo is a tramp. Fred lets Leo move in with him. An absurdist feature debut with a laugh and a tear in stuffy Netherlands.

the narrative incentive featuring middle-aged pedantic men in a repressed environment is immensely overused / in this case saintly lighting, 50s neat interiors, absurdist twists and EVEN bach's erbarme mich are of no help - somehow cinematic recipes for creating capresque "masculine" sentimentality seem to be lost - matterhorn's soapy grand finale proves it well / so ... don't look now
Very slow to get going, Matterhorn spends much of its 87 minutes riffing on sight gags that unfortunately just aren't that funny. It's about the collision of reality with our beliefs and how we chose to respond in the aftermath. The final scene is beautifully played, evocative and while the lyrics are 'one the nose' the emotional power is strong and true. 2.5 stars
