Better than I first thought. Sure - it's not Bertolucci's best movie. But the atmosphere is very intimate and there are also some good dialogues. One of the main features is the camera work supporting the inside of the main character, especially during sequences outside the cellar. It is used to construct his view of the world without any words; and of course it is changed in the end.
Only a tiny glimpse of the capacities of a daring filmmaker who long ago had the power, will and talent to incite, inspire, repel or seduce audiences with a particular realm of sexuality and the human condition. It tries to revisit all his themes, but can't live up to it's creator's reputation. Conventional and tiresome.
