While the Farrelly Brothers may have more misses than hits on their resume, and I'm never quite sure if their use of misfit and disabled characters is championing them or having a laugh at their expense, I do certainly appreciate the way they shot their 90's comedies like bonafide films rather than an extended TV episode. "Irene" feels like it should have been funnier, but it's still a decent showcase for Jim Carrey.
Not sure why I watched this, but its actually a pretty uncompromisingly weird flick. The plot doesn't make any sense mostly because its just an excuse to show off Carrey's lunacy. Still there's too many absurdities not to take note of for better or worse. And as juvenile as it all is there's a weird sense of humanity and even Americana in the sympathy and sense of community it has towards weirdos. Worth seeing.
