  1. dionysus67's rating of the film Mediterraneo

Bathed in Aegean summer sunlight this tale of paradise lost amidst WWII exploits to the fullest the fantasy of laziness and the myth of unproblematic integration with a local culture. Shot in Kastelorizo, it offers a conventional narrative clothed in the peasant/bucolic idealization package that made it a box office hit. Admittedly enjoyable, it, nonetheless, fades from memory as it is formally lotophagus.

"dedicato a tutti quelli che stanno scappando..."

  3. Alvise Narduzzi's rating of the film Mediterraneo

  9. TheCentralRuhr's rating of the film Mediterraneo

This “light on action, heavy on subtext” approach can be found in other directors oeuvres, including Aki Kaurismäki, Jim Jarmusch, and even Italy’s own Michelangelo Antonioni but Salvatores demonstrates no interest in allowing this film’s pieces to measure up to something greater than the sum of their parts. Too many segments in this episodic plot add nothing to the overarching commentary on escapism.

  11. Empire's rating of the film Mediterraneo

This is certainly not a one sided film about war propaganda as the Americans seem able to do with everything. Italian soldiers that during WWII have to occupy a 'highly' strategic Greek island, soldiers that from the start are shown with great humanity and not the hard boiled ones you see in Vietnam war movies. Witty and positive and after viewing, it makes the world seem like a better place.

An indisputable representative of the "commedia all'italiana" great story and characters, the lack of "depth" is counteracted with great sense of humor. guaranteed entertainment.
