  • Neither/Nor's rating of the film Men and Wolves

For a few glorious moments in the climax, all the subtext is effaced and the film is stripped to brutal symbolism of the resistenza. These moments emerge like war. But the rest: neorealism at its pinkest and most Hollywood, with a stunningly overdetermined romance that reconciles the borders of classism out of the death of Italian facism, oddly represented by Mexican actor Armendáriz. Mangano's legs do not appear.
