Doug Liman is a frustrating director: when he's at his best - Swingers, EoT, Bourne, this film - he shares cinematic DNA with Danny Boyle or Steven Soderbergh - that breathless, kinetic rush of a true film lover. He needs to pick his projects better, and do more of them. This is great fun, and I do love Cruise when he's in open-mouthed, why-me antihero mode.
Tom Cruise has rarely been one to disappear into a role - he's first and foremost a Movie Star, which is precisely why you hire him. At least here, portraying a hotshot daredevil with a million dollar grin who risks life and limb for the sake of America (re: Hollywood), he's more or less playing himself in his "Mission: Impossible" era. Cruise remains committed as always, but the filmmaking is strictly on autopilot.
The appropriate emulation of the looks and vibe of the 80s was one of the few beneficial aspects of a painfully vulnerable exercise whose lack of originality was exasperating. “American Made” might be able to entertain now and then, but it's just another vain attempt to squeeze the silly life of a scoundrel into two hours of a second-rate cinematic romp. (2.5)
American Made is a sly& funny satire about the US funded drug trade in the 80s and it features another great Tom Cruise performance. It's entertaining& funny as hell, and it's unafraid to tell the truth in an era where such honesty is derided as 'fake news'. Also nice to see a film shit on Reagan again. The motherfucker should have been put in jail.
Not sure what makes this film one of the best of the year when it's very similar to the underrated gem "War Dogs" from 2016, which was critically maligned. Perhaps it's Tom Cruise's ability to still possess a smile that will dazzle and make you think you're watching a better movie. Moreover, "American Made" is another strong entry in the comedy crime-drama genre where corruption is rampant and excess is celebrated.
"American Made" expune partea întunecată a Americii violent.
A wickedly compelling thrill ride, American Made is a superb docu-dramedy about the US interference in foreign nations, and the hypocrisy of politics. Featuring sharp editing, stylish direction and an uncompromising script, this film manages to succeed where most of the genre have failed. By the end of the journey, there's a feeling of completion without ever resorting to a staged morality play.
