The promise of Eastwood approaching the worlds of the Southern Gothic, magical realism & black comedy seems incredibly enticing, but the film disappoints. It's directionless; the story meanders; the comedy isn't funny & the drama isn't engaging. While the first act captures a sense of atmosphere & picaresque wonder, it soon gets lost in the flow of an uninteresting assemblage of plot with its weak characterisations.
What could easily end up as a excruciating murder mystery is saved by a handful of colorful characters, with each of them being special enough to deserve a movie of their own. Although it doesn't seem to hold a repetitive value due to its overall and overlong mediocrity, it manages to bring an enjoyable first watch experience with satisfying plot and persuasive performances.
Eastwood loves women. His gaze on the woman - here Lady Chablis, an exotic transgender performer - surprises us again. Giving her a major role, he plays with the codes for our delight. transgender
Eastwood shows in this film he was a better director than an actor. Since the film is dragged out to an interminable and self-indulgent 2 and a 1/2 hours and is in dire need of at least an hour of editing, this doesn't say a lot for his acting ability. Watchable if you are an insomniac and appreciate underplayed gayness including the scene where a gay Christian says he is "out of it" now... (continued in comments)
Kevin Spacey, John Cusack and Jack Thompson co-star in Clint Eastwood's terrific screen adaption of the best-selling John Berendt book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Under the Atlantic Coast sway of oak tree Spanish moss in manicured Savannah, Georgia, the film unveils some deep secrets and sexual tension centered on the town's esteemed antiques dealer. A noir-worthy film based on a true story. Well done.
Really sad. A somnambulent performance from Kevin Spacey, and Mr. Eastwood's inability to conjure any sense of atmosphere at all, and his insistence on adding a heterosexual love story to the plotline help make this film a hopeless botch. The Lady Chablis alone rises above this film. Even Mr. Eastwood can't snuff out her brilliance.
