Midnight Son compellingly uses its vampire tropes as a metaphor for loneliness and intimacy. It develops this metaphor as an extension of accepting one's inner identity to in-turn be accepting of another's love. At the same time, there's an antiseptic quality to its drama, emotions, and details, in that, it isn't as much of a layered analysis as it could be with its observations, feeling repetitive and drawn out.
