Don Cheadle's works in here are sadly underrated. It may not be perfect, the ending was a bit blurred and disappointing, but the you can certainly feel the chaotic, yet contained, switching tones in the entire film.

2.5 I like the concept but not the execution

  6. msmichel's rating of the film Miles Ahead

Cheadle gives a towering performance as Miles Davis but as a director, despite a cool aesthetic and editing technique, loses the film in an unfocused script. The music of course is magnificent throughout but the supporting players are no more than cyphers excepting Corinealdi who makes a strong impression.

  7. Alex Malex's rating of the film Miles Ahead

Finally a movie, that doesn't strictly follow the life of a musician, but on the contrary - it dismisses the reality. And this is to admire (especially in the context of "Nina" and "Born to be blue") since here we see interpretation, imagination, freedom, things that are milestones for all kind of arts and more importantly are part of Miles Davis' personality. Great comics-like visuals.

  8. Konrad Szlendak's rating of the film Miles Ahead

Might've been way better if Cheadle went for the dark cup if Miles' mind instead of chase with guns, but there are pretty good moments here.

after all, it is a don cheadle movie

  13. Carlos Filipe Freitas's rating of the film Miles Ahead

    … a kind of gangster (2.5 stars)

  14. Steve Pulaski's rating of the film Miles Ahead

Don Cheadle works around-the-clock like a renaissance man, painting a vivid, if disorganized, picture of a musical legend that had the music build him up, corrupt him, and eventually build him up again. A solid passion project that, even through narrative cohesion issues - mainly because it operates on a "cause and effect relationship" kind of structure - manages to be both compelling and intimate.

  15. Maxime Bracquemart's rating of the film Miles Ahead

Dommage, on ressent vraiment plus la simple envie de Don C. de jouer Miles Davis que celle de le comprendre réellement.

  16. MarcelVonPure's rating of the film Miles Ahead

Historically and biographically ludicrous, but cinematically entertaining.

  17. Jacques de Villiers's rating of the film Miles Ahead

In structure and intent, this film does a great service to the sensibility of Miles Davis - and it is the sensibility of an artist that Cheadle is chasing in this film, not the facts of a life. Not surprisingly then, Cheadle's performance is right on. If Daniel Day Lewis can get an Oscar for old man Lincoln, then Cheadle deserves at least the same for Miles. His commitment and conviction is total...

  18. Mariana Vilela's rating of the film Miles Ahead

The film is very amusing. Incredible acting work by Don Cheadle and not disappointing for his first film as a director. It's not a particularly good or loyal biography, nevertheless it is original and the editing is remarkable. It is worth watching whether you're a jazz fan or not.

  19. Renton47's rating of the film Miles Ahead

Cheadle delivers half a film that I suspect would make Miles happy (as much as that's possible), and another half which toys with the more redemptive nature of biopics. It's the former which impresses, an energetic and ugly characterisation which works precisely for its unapologetic tone and form. His performance sustains the film, and while unfocused, it captures the artist's nature a la 'I'm Not There'.

  20. Thomas's rating of the film Miles Ahead

A mediocre confused production, part biopic part 'Hollywood-ised' caper movie. Two things did pleasantly surprise me though. Firstly, Cheadle's portrayal which captured the 'essence' of the character, albeit from a singular point of Miles' prolific and wide-ranging career. Secondly, Robert Glasper's score, formidably letting his ego take a back seat and allowing the music to enhance and support in a respectful way.

  21. Sean Patrick Stevens's rating of the film Miles Ahead

A hilarious fictional music bio that sadly won't have a huger audience!

  22. Julia Miville's rating of the film Miles Ahead

I chuckled at parts but was bored through most of it.

  23. William R Clark's rating of the film Miles Ahead

what antics!Would be remiss to not acknowledge the tightrope on which this film walked for most of its existence, and the good news is that this shows in some erotically-charged, out of control angles and edits. and cheadle seamlessly weaves the music in with a performance less studied than heartfelt. it will take more to get ahead of that atrocious framing device. If someone can explain what that ending was about...

  24. nouvelle vague 1960's rating of the film Miles Ahead

In this rollercoaster ride of a "bio-pic".Don Cheadle is outstanding as the enigmatic and dangerous to know Miles Davis.Mainly set in the 5 missing years of the 1970's,when he vanished from the music scene.Cheadle as director, pulls off a double flashback,in order to show the rise, fall and resurrection of the genius that was Miles Davis. With the coolest soundtrack around, its a must see and hear!
