Well I haven't even seen the movie that these "minions" come from yet, but I thought this one showed potential and could be slapstick fun to watch. Well, the first minutes are excellent but the movie goes too fast through history before ending up in a boring 1960s mileau where it turns up (yet again for a movie) to be a kind-of spy villain parody that bored me so much I went to sleep on the couch.
A charade throughout. Minions lacks not only direction but, surprisingly, a true appreciation for the carefree and absurd. Minionese dialogue, which sees the language expanded to somewhat of a Romance-based pidgin, is witty and well constructed, being perhaps the sole standout.
In small doses the minions are brilliant. However an entire film the slapstick can only get you so far with one long fart joke that takes it too far and goes on for another hour just to make sure. Sandra Bullock's voice for the main villain is just painful! I don't think she's capable of doing angry over a certain vocal range. Animation is great, a few funny gags but you'll be sicking your brain on autopilot.
The first half of the film shows potential; the wordless gibberish of the minions (as characters) pushing the filmmakers towards something almost approaching silent comedy. This later gives way to a brief road-movie set-up that is charming & littered with absurdist humour. Things start to lose focus when it becomes a standard "evil villain threatens the world" action-adventure story, but the animation is fantastic.
Interesting concept i guess that they feel incomplete without someone to serve or a boss figure. But since the other films stand on their own i can't help but think it was un-necessary and money making. At times got very far fetched and stupid. But I'm always partial to some sandra bullock
