3.8 Man, I like the Sixties! Everything - and everyone - was stylish somehow. This is a fine example. The first minutes of this Twilight Zone - inspired thriller are particularly hip: power failure in a New York high-rise building and just about everyone is very coolly wisecracking about the situation. As for the rest: Peck, Matthau, McCarthy - all fine. If only the solution would be a bit smarter. Still, a good one.
This compelling, oh-so-60's, drama has excellent dialog, directing, cinematography and locations. The fine cast includes Gregory Peck, Diane Baker (doing much better than usual) and Walter Matthau. In supporting roles Kevin McCarthy, Jack Weston, Leif Erickson, George Kennedy and Robert H. Harris do some of their best work. Quincy Jones's music fits like a glove. Good, judicious use of flashbacks.
