The filmmakers attempt to craft a 'Beaches' for the modern day but come up short despite some fine performances. Toni Collette gives a wonderful turn here that often overshadows her co-star Drew Barrymore but the chemistry between the two shines through. Casting is mostly strong with well received turns from Dominic Cooper and Jacqueline Bisset. A film about female friendship is appreciated; the 'illness' angle not.
One of the few female-centric films of the year that at least recognizes how horrible the lead character is to everyone around her and uses an excuse in order to lessen her thoughtlessness (see Paper Towns and Trainwreck for more unapologetic examples). Some very solid acting from two underrated leads and some decent character relations save this from being as unlikable as Milly herself is.
