I don't hate this movie per se, its a completely dull, uninspired and utterly average movie at its core, but because it touched in one of the most creative franchises in Pixar's resume (which is saying a lot), not caring at all in the source material. Not only doesn't it respect the lore set by the first movie, the characters don't feel like and embryonic fragment of the likable ones it is inspired by.
Brava Pixar, brava.
Far better than the critical consensus at the time had led me to believe. Entertaining in its own right (with a host of memorable new monsters populating the campus) whilst also connecting neatly with Monsters Inc. The theme that it's important to recognise one's personal limitations as well as strengths is a rare one for a childrens' film and I appreciated it.
It was lovely to reencounter some of the monsters and getting to know some new ones too. "University" is funny, loud, energetic and carries an important message for kids and grown-ups alike. It lacks, however, the emotional core of the first film, because this time there's no adorable little girl melting our hearts while spreading the chaos everywhere! I say they should bring her back for a third film!
