Ratings & Reviews

  1. Warren Spratley's rating of the film Monte Carlo

Where does one begin: Lubitsch's pre-Bressonian grasp of the power of isolated limbs moving through space, the way naturalism is worked into the overall aesthetic--the train, the workers attending to the land, the mundanity of MacDonald's groggy awakening & flustered search for her keys--the brilliant, metaphysical finale, how the opera & the film's drama work in counterpoint for maximum effect. Really a great film.

  6. Blumes's rating of the film Monte Carlo

Lubitsch still finding his footing with sound. That doesn't mean there isn't magic moments along the way.

  7. Duncan Gray's rating of the film Monte Carlo

The rapiest of all musicals, and an uncomfortable sign that with the wrong casting, a purportedly dashing, classy, and irresistible male lead in a musical can come off as a total creep. Pros: I like the way it plays with fiction near the end. Nice touch.

  8. Cole Caudle's rating of the film Monte Carlo

A delirious ninety minute long dirty joke. Wonderful.
