A lost treasure from a sadly little-known director. This lavish production is the finest film made from Dumas's gargantuan novel, which has been deftly streamlined for the screen. It's also the last hurrah of the silent era, a sprightly super-production that occasionally shows the influence French Impressionism as practiced by Gance and company. A literary adaptation that's nevertheless as alive as any great silent.
