Ratings & Reviews

  1. msmichel's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

Has the American definition of 'freedom' and practice of jingoism ever been satirized better than this '69 film from William Klein? Extremely clever and very humorous throughout the film is '60's day-glo pop expressionism at its best with wry performances and tongue in cheek political thought. Delphine Seyrig gives a strong and overtly sexual turn here. My fav here may well be the 'freedom' building elevator.

  3. Funda Can Çuvalcı's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

The film did not appeal to me much. Yet, it is an important satire on some American "ideals". After a few of his works, I understood that William Klein has not only a critical but also a crazy way of looking at things.

  4. tintinmugshot's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

I'll never see freedom the same way again.

  5. STEPHAN's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

Real fucked up and fun film, althought not at all clever. The US Embassy scene has real symbolism though. And very funny for French people to see Yves Montand and Philippe Noiret in such a movie.

  6. Viacheslav's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

Not funny at all. No style. Primitive ideological statement.

  7. Durandré's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

  8. azoulay's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

  9. Michael Zyx MH Claes's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

==== To watch for Delphine SEYRIG, wandering in nightie most of the time. KLEIN is as visionary than Do It Yourself. ==== Fun casting: Philippe Noiret, Donald Pleasence, J-Cl Drouot, Serge Gainsbourg, Rufus, Catherine Rouvel, Sami Frey, D. Cohn-Bendit etc.

  10. EdzeronK's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

    Comédie très guerre froide.

  11. SpacePirate's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

Starts off as a great satire of the "American Dream" and of "freedom" in general (in the eyes of Uncle Sam) but as with most Klein films I have seen, kind of falls apart in the middle and becomes a mess by the end. This is probably my favorite film of his I have seen though, and I have added one star for boldness and originality. Unfortunately, not much replay value here. 4 stars

  12. Dogville59's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

Over the top fun with some pretty digging social commentary.

  13. mpho3's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

"Klein's over-the-top fantasy-satire is conceivably the most anti-American movie ever made, but only an American (albeit an expatriate...) could've made it. Done in a Punch & Judy manner that occasionally suggests Godard or Kubrick, and combining guerrilla-style documentary w/ expressionism, this feisty political cartoon remains a singular expression of 60s irreverence."-Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader 3.5 stars

  14. David R Williams's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

It never ceases to amaze me that there was a time when movies like this could not only be made (and shot on film!) but actually screened in movie theaters. Imagine a sort of ultra-right wing white supremacist version of Captain America making the world safe for the coming New World Order. Something like that. Subversion has never been more colorful!

  15. Max Seqgar's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

This insolent movie is the equivalent of RTnews summed up in 2 hours and far more groovy. Nothing has changed after all. Brilliant!!!

  16. forrestd's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

horrible acting, terrible script... waste of time.

  17. Olivier Serafinowicz's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

"We ve got to build walls." Early incarnation of "Donald" through the superhero myth.

  18. Rupert Hunter's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

  19. Alexandre Duchesneau's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

Un beau portrait de Donald Trump!!

  20. Ludovic72's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

  21. BaptistePK's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

Excellent film !

  22. John's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

Fantastic. Still utterly relevant. Nothing's changed. And Delphine Seyrig is sublime.

  23. MATTEO BITTANTI's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

A true masterpiece. The American Embassy-as-supermarket is pure genius. The brainwashing sequence about the American Dream prefigures Sekula's The Parallax View by a decade. America's deliberate infantilization of culture is as fresh as ever in the age of Trump. A realistic depiction of US imperialism, Mr. Freedom is the only superhero movie you'll ever need to watch. The Frankfurt School would likely approve. Not.

  24. Wee Hunk's rating of the film Mr. Freedom

This is a much better print than the one I saw. It's a bit long winded, but the heart's in the right place.
