If you had a rotten childhood you are still able to be a good father or mother. Don’t make it an excuse. You always give an impact to others, with all your behaviour, all your words and actions. Agnès B. is able to give that “lesson” in a beautiful unagitated way, in most tender scenes, maybe you will miss some of them. And she finds the most important things in life even in heartbreaking moments: humour. And then you will see the sea first.

[agnès b.] has helped finance movies by Harmony Korine, Claire Denis, and Jonas Mekas. Their influence is apparent in My Name Is Hmmm…, but the way Trouble tells a story and the story she tells are utterly personal. Her elliptical editing of both images and music can be startling, illuminating, or awkward, but it is always purposeful in expressing how the consciousness and memory of her heroine, an eleven-year-old girl, is shaped.

Unfortunately, Ms b’s first narrative outing as a director suggests that she’s far more effective behind the scenes than she is behind the camera. The cloyingly titled My Name is Hmmm… begins as a flat slab of Gallic miserablism before abruptly switching gears to become a darkly whimsical coming-of-age story that could pass for the unformed student work of a young Catherine Breillat.
