A 1930s upper-class widow struggling to reshape her life fighting social conventions is a juicy set-up but the script and dialogue don't stand up for it. Stanwyck's charm saves the film in spite of being one of the most docile roles she ever embodied.
Good premise, but unfortunately film is quite tame for a Stanwyck vehicle. She does her best to save the docile script, and her chemistry with the other leads makes it watchable. Not sure if Stanwyck ever made a truly bad film, if she did I have yet to find it. Recommended, just don't expect Baby Face/Double Indemnity level of entertainment expected from the legend. 3.5 stars, extra half star bc... its Stanwyck. Haha
