Ratings & Reviews

  1. José Neves's rating of the film Native Son

A complex fictional structure in which we not only have the "whites" as racist beasts or indulgents of "good heart", as well as the protagonist, also the author of the book from which the film is an adaptation, is presented as a victim of a system but also as a real criminal, alongside a discriminatory society. Filmed with the virtues of a refined film noir: lighting and a fluid camera through scenarios and spaces.

  2. bernardovazdecastro's rating of the film Native Son

There is a good expression in Portugal for these kinda movie, "good intentions are the hell full". I left in the midle of the film, and i know there is a trial where the main character are judge by is color and not by is crime. Still, the first hour i only saw a bunch of white bourgeois people and all the black people looking like caricatures (i know these is a novel written by a black person), but it was racists.

  3. Charles Coleman's rating of the film Native Son

Technically a mess, the acting isn't great but its an important piece of cinema. The drama is good, there are some interesting noir elements in the film and a lot of the N-word. A pretty interesting time capsule and companion to the book Native Son.
