A good-looking Australian western about one of the country's most famous heroes who fought and lost against evil British officers. The film lacks something special in it's execution and the characters feel half-finished and none involved seem to give their best acting this time around.
A masterful handling of a violent and complicated story - that is, without making it feel like a genre picture. Ultimately it is a bushranger Western comparable to, say, The Proposition, though far less sun-baked and a fair deal more romantic and sentimental (at times bordering on melodrama). The cinematography is beautiful and chilly, while the performances are inspired all around.
