Ratings & Reviews

  1. A.B. II: The Return's rating of the film Never Give a Sucker an Even Break

There are certainly some big laughs to be had (as it includes many of Fields' greatest lines), and its surreal-like style is very ahead of its time. But, ultimately, it's a comedy with more misses than hits. The featured songs are lame and instantly forgettable, there's too many lackluster jokes and weak sketches, and even Fields' timing is surprisingly off in a lot of scenes. Close, but no Stingeroo.

  2. Diderot's rating of the film Never Give a Sucker an Even Break

It has a few good jokes, but it's generally not as good as a lot of people claim-- though it is (was) something of an original (and it interestingly came out the same year as the much better "Hellzapoppin'").

  3. SpacePirate's rating of the film Never Give a Sucker an Even Break

A very ahead of its time comedy. The selfawareness of the characters and absurdity of the plot give it an almost Luis Bunuel or Dali quality. Not for the faint of heart, as it moves slowly at times, and not really a good introduction to Fields style, I would go with It's A Gift for that. Still some fabulous moments here. Lots of fun. 4.5 stars

  4. ICN's rating of the film Never Give a Sucker an Even Break

Hitting and getting hit by little children: check. Jokes about alcohol abuse: check. Most absurdist, selfreferential plotline more than 40 years before Monty Python's Meaning of Life: check. It's kind of slow up to today's standards, but I found the absurdity of it all jawdropping and WC Fields' snarl and wisecracks always lighten up the day for me.

  5. Slowart's rating of the film Never Give a Sucker an Even Break

margarent dumont is simply g r a n diose / this time not in her usual age d'or fashion but rather in a heavy metal queen fashion / "mother knows best"

  6. Spiritchaser's rating of the film Never Give a Sucker an Even Break

    Comical & Surreal. Almost Buñuelian.

  7. David M.K.'s rating of the film Never Give a Sucker an Even Break

A comedy without any comedy. They're more aerodynamic that way.
