Brilliant application to the modern world of key elements from the HAMMER gothic landscape. Instead of the Baron's escaped monster lumbering through the eerie pine forest, there is - an aged pedophile. Instead of the villagers being preyed upon by their feudal overlord, the Count, there is the pedophile's protective and powerful family, the town fathers. Final lingering sense of a community adrift. Hammer at its best
***1/2 .A very good surprise. The movie could have been sanctimonious but isn't. The theme is very daring considering it was shot in 1960, the photography - thank you, Freddie Francis - superb and the villain one of the most disturbing characters I've seen in a long time. Highly recommended.
