While some stories resonated with me (Michelle Pfeiffer treating her resolutions as a bucket list, or Robert De Niro dying), it was far too clumsy and the ways the stories were forcibly connected was almost offensively stupid. Love Actually > > Valentine's Day > > > New Year's Eve
Here's the thing about these films - they may be hamfisted at times, shamelessly manipulative at others, but they do have an undeniable charm about them - a kind of naive earnestness that is hard to resist. This semi-sequel to VALENTINE'S DAY is actually more successful in its aims. Schematic, yes, but it does what it sets out to do. If you surrender yourself to it, you'll find something to enjoy.
Although what would seem to be an interesting construct... the film fails at substance in the connections between characters and the ideologies behind New Year's Eve. NYE hosts some great actors, yet there was an overall emotive counterfeit feel. The film got lost in the cast, the individual moments and jokes... while forgetting to fiber together in an interesting way.
I think you can actually hear the cinema's dying breaths if you listen really closely during the ending dance number. The movie certainly feels like the last gasps of a doomed art. Incoherent, stupid, inane, drek that totals to an almost nihilistic experience. Be careful when you stare into this void - it stares right back.
